TriNet and Founder/CEO Martin Babinec Profiled in Bo Burlingham's Small Giants
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (April 5, 2007) – TriNet, a nationwide provider of human resource (HR) outsourcing services for small and medium-sized companies, is among the companies featured in Small Giants: Companies That Choose to Be Great Instead of Big, a book written by Inc. Magazine editor-in-large Bo Burlingham. Particular attention is paid to the decision path of founder & CEO Martin Babinec as he took TriNet on a journey towards growth and equity financing.
In Small Giants, Burlingham focuses on highly successful, privately held companies. These companies choose to stay private in order to pursue business goals other than growth targets, which can happen at the expense of more meaningful goals such as creating a great place to work and making contributions to the local community.
TriNet and particularly Babinec appear in the book in a slightly different context. TriNet is profiled not as a company that was determined to stay private and avoid growth, but rather as an organization that sought outside equity financing while still retaining many of the characteristics that Burlingham believes make the Small Giants successful: clarity of vision, love for the business, responsibility to the community, and trust-based relationships with team members, customers, and partners.
Burlingham feels that most entrepreneurs who possess a powerful mix of vision, drive, and the ability to attract top-quality people will have to face the choice of seeking equity financing or retaining sole ownership of their companies. Although Babinec chose a different path than his "Small Giant" colleagues, Burlingham points out that it was a path that led to success on its own terms: "[In the mid '90s, Babinec] sold . a controlling interest to a large European company for $3.9 million, whereupon he ratcheted up the company's growth rate several more notches, opening offices all around the company."
