Cristo Rey San Diego High School is bringing a college-prep learning community to an area of San Diego with the lowest household income and poorest performing schools. The school is part of the Cristo Rey Network which comprises 37 Catholic schools providing a college preparatory education in urban areas to economically disadvantaged students.

Cristo Rey San Diego High School provides underserved students with limited economic means access to an affordable education and a work study program where students work five days a month at San Diego companies. Working at these entry-level professional jobs provides real-world experience and offsets a large portion of their tuition.

Bob Nascenzi, Founding President, describes the launching of Cristo Rey SDHS as not unlike a start-up business even though it’s a nonprofit educational institution. In preparation for the school’s opening, he must raise capital for the school, hire faculty and upgrade the property, all while managing HR functions.

Fortunately, Bob was no stranger to TriNet’s comprehensive HR solution. In his previous two start-up businesses, he worked with TriNet after an extensive PEO search. Once he started with Cristo Rey, the call to TriNet was the first one he made as payroll processing and benefits administration were things he wanted to make sure he got right.

While their team is small now, Bob expects to expand his staff of talented employees to support the first freshman class in the next year. Soon, he’ll need to hire additional faculty and specialized staff until they’re at full student enrollment with all four grade levels.
