Cristo Rey San Diego High School is bringing a college-prep learning community to an area of San Diego with the lowest household income and poorest performing schools. The school is part of the Cristo Rey Network which comprises 37 Catholic schools providing a college preparatory education in urban areas to economically disadvantaged students.
Cristo Rey San Diego High School provides underserved students with limited economic means access to an affordable education and a work study program where students work five days a month at San Diego companies. Working at these entry-level professional jobs provides real-world experience and offsets a large portion of their tuition.
Bob Nascenzi, Founding President, describes the launching of Cristo Rey SDHS as not unlike a start-up business even though it’s a nonprofit educational institution. In preparation for the school’s opening, he must raise capital for the school, hire faculty and upgrade the property, all while managing HR functions.
